CLOUD COMPUTING: FACILITATING CUTTING EDGE COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH
Cloud computing - where storage facilities are provided on demand over the internet from shared data centres - enables effective research collaboration to blossom. Rather than having to purchase a cluster of computers or struggle to find space at the lab, researchers can outsource their computing storage needs to remote facilities in the cloud and make this data accessible to colleagues.

CLIMATE CONTROL FOR THE BURNS UNIT
Individualized climate control for burns victims in hospitals might not only improve comfort for such patients, but improve working conditions for those taking care of them. In addition, it could cut energy requirements by three quarters where cooling is needed and by up to a quarter where heating is used. Details of this low-exergy, LowEx, system are described in the latest issue of the International Journal of Exergy.

RESEARCHERS DEVELOPING HIGH-FLYING JET CAR
It's dark and late. You're speeding through the streets of a downtown metropolis. You're being chased and the pursuers are quickly gaining ground. With a knowing smile, you simply press the 'launch' button of your jet car and take off into the night sky. The grounded villains are left staring into the air at your jet steam... It may sound like a typical superhero scenario but the reality (minus the drama!) could be a lot closer than you think.

SOFTWARE RENDERS EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE IN 3-D SPLENDOR
As an atmospheric scientist, Martin Jucker found it frustrating that the Earth's atmosphere typically appears as a consistent, two-dimensional plane when scientists visualize atmospheric data. Horizontal and vertical data are often modeled separately, resulting in both "a very high and a very short box," said Jucker, an associate research scholar in Princeton University's Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences.

GOOGLE OFFERS CARDBOARD PATH TO VIRTUAL REALITY
With some DIY spirit and appreciation of virtual reality immersion, you can have the VR experience. You need little more than cardboard and some items that you can pick up at your local hardware store. Google has its own egalitarian virtual reality solution, announced this week at I/O 2014. Its launch is a delightful outcome of Google's creatives. A team from something called the Cardboard project has figured out how to bring virtual reality on your smartphone using inexpensive, accessible, everyday objects for a headset. The headset ingredients include cardboard, lenses, magnets, Velcro, a rubber band and, if you like, an near-field communications (NFC) tag. Got cardboard? Google's project team asks. Then download Cardboard (the app).
