Nexus 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4 shown off in comparison video

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 06:04 PM PDT

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy Note 4 video Carphone Warehouse 2

After giving us the world’s first underwater unboxing, the folks at UK’s Carphone Warehouse are back again, this time with an early hands-on with the phone everyone’s talking about: Motorola and Google’s Nexus 6. More of a quick comparison video, Carphone Warehouse pits the device against the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in a quick spec roundup, another Android phablet looking to give Motorola a run for their money.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy Note 4 video Carphone Warehouse 1

This actually marks one of the few times we’ve gotten to see the Nexus 6 outside of blurry photo leaks and press renders. What we found interesting was how much noticeably larger the Nexus 6 was in comparison to the Galaxy Note 4. If you’re a phablet lover looking to challenge the constrains of your pockets, then this will be the device for you.

Nexus 6 vs Galaxy Note 4 video Carphone Warehouse 3

While it can be argued that having a stock Android experience is more “beneficial” than a manufacturer UI like TouchWiz, keep in mind that often times stock Android trails behind OEM skins in terms of features. And anyone who’s ever experienced a Samsung device knows there’s certainly no shortage of features (overkill even). Check out the comparison video down below for an early look at the Nexus 6.

Leaked Android 5.0 Lollipop apps: new Messenger, Google Play Music, Google Fit, and more [DOWNLOAD]

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 04:18 PM PDT

Android 5.0 Lollipop Screenshot

Earlier today a leaked — and much more closer to final — Android 5.0 Lollipop system dump has been making the rounds, popping up all over the net. It seems this build had a few additional Google apps that didn’t make it to the 2nd Developer Preview (which we gave you a look at on Saturday), with updated Material versions of Google Play Music, Calendar, Messenger (formerly Messaging), Gmail, and more locked inside.

It didn’t take long for someone to extract all these apps, and while most wont work by simple sideloading, we did find 2 — Messenger, Google Play Music — installed just fine on our Nexus 5 running Android 5.0 Lollipop Developer Preview (although we’ve heard others having luck on KitKat ROMs). Just make sure you uninstall the originals before giving these new apps a try.

The rest? Well, most will require root access and you placing them inside the /system/lib folder on your device. Might wanna perform a backup just in case.

Messenger

Android 5.0 Lollipop Messenger 1

Say hello to Messenger, Google’s new SMS/MMS app replacing the aging stock Messages app. As you can see, the app has a fresh new Material design and doesn’t really weigh too heavy with the features. It’s pretty much your standard SMS affair. The familiar “+” button is always present in list view, with the ability to long press to select or swipe-to-archive conversations.

When in conversation view, adding attachments is straight forward. You simply snap a photo using the in-app viewfinder (you can make it bigger by swiping up), add photos from your gallery, or record a (very low quality) voice message. Each conversation view has its own color which we admit, will take a little getting used to.

Google Play Music

Google Play Music Lollipop leak

Google Play Music was another app we got up and running on our Nexus 5 and although it’s not the drastically overhauled version we saw from Google’s Material Design page back in June, the UI has been updated enough that it can scrape by with calling itself “Material.”

Really, it’s not too different from the version you’re probably looking at on your device but don’t get too upset. We’re sure this is only an early version (it was leaked after all) and the final will have all those wonderful animations Google is already previewing on their Android.com page.

Google Fit

Google Fit leak Android 5.0 Lollipop

While we couldn’t get Fit installed on our device, Prashant Gahlot on Google+ didn’t have much trouble getting it up and running on his Nexus 4. Judging from the screenshots, it seems Fit will be geared more to the casual fitness enthusiast, tracking your goals and allowing the user to setup timed activities and goals.

Should you guys get any more of these leaked apps up and running on your device, feel free to post a screenshot or let us know how they’re working for you.

Hey Android Devs: $75 gets you a month-long sponsorship on Phandroid.com!

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 01:15 PM PDT

IMG_0037

It can be tough for a developer to get the word out about their apps and games. Google Play is big, so much so that good apps often get lost in a sea of digital mayhem. The bad news is it won’t be getting any smaller anytime soon. It’d be a shame to let all the hard work and time put into development go unseen. Advertisements work, but many independent developers don’t have very large marketing budgets. The good news? Phandroid understands.

That’s why we’re offering affordable sponsorship slots for apps and games right on Phandroid.com! For just $300, your app will get 30 days of prominent placement in our apps and games widget that shows up on desktop and the mobile web throughout the entire site. That will get your app an estimated 1 million+ impressions for every month you’re signed up, and turning even just a few of those impressions into downloads could do wonders for the growth of your app.

So what exactly are you getting for your money? Let’s take a look:

  • One of 25 spots for your app or game icon (50 x 50 pixels) throughout Phandroid.com linking directly to your download.
  • A post on Phandroid.com at the end of each month mentioning and thanking all of our great sponsors, including you!

A couple of other things to note: when submitting your request for sponsorship, your creative must be that of an app icon in the aforementioned dimensions of 50 pixels by 50 pixels, and it must link directly to your app on Google Play.

We also want to stress that we want this to be an opportunity for serious, respected (and respectable) developers looking to advertise legitimate apps and games. In other words, if your app is more along the lines of a shameless Flappy Bird clone or something of the same ilk we reserve the right to deny it based on our own discretion.

To top all that off, there’d be no better time to sign up than right now as we’re offering 75% off the usual price to the first 20 developers who sign up by Friday, October 24th — that brings the cost of your first month to just $75! Simply use the promo code phandev at checkout to receive your discount.

This is a great opportunity to get your app or game off the ground and into the phones and tablets of the millions of Android users around the world. Be sure to take a look at this and many other great advertising opportunities available on Phandroid right here, and we’d love to hear from you so don’t hesitate to drop us a line if you have any questions!

Android 5.0 Lollipop brings ‘Ambient display’ mode to the Nexus 6, other devices too

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 01:13 PM PDT

Android 5.0 Lollipop DSC07199

You wont find it in the new Android 5.0 Lollipop Developer Preview (which we gave you guys a hands-on with over the weekend), but thanks to a freshly leaked full Android 5.0 ROM, we now have some info on a new Motorola-like feature coming inside Lollipop. Dubbed “Ambient display,” the feature was quickly mentioned on the official Android.com Lollipop page saying,”Where supported by the hardware, your device will wake up as soon as you pick it up or tap the screen twice.”

Nexus 6 Android 5.0 Lollipop Ambient Display edit

Screenshot taken from a leaked full Lollipop build

You may remember Motorola’s “Actively Display” feature (now known as Moto Display), which activates your phone’s display when you pick it up (or approach it with the new Moto X 2014). Seems Lollipop will have something similar — well, only if you’re hardware supports it. We’re sure this has something to do with the processor/sensors found in most higher end Android devices, so in all likelihood, most of us should be good.

The ambient display setting is now yet another great idea Android is adopting from manufacturer UIs and joins the ranks of the new Setup Wizard app, Battery saver, and Priority notifications.

Nexus Player is back in the Play Store for pre-order

player store

Late last week the Nexus Player officially went up for pre-order. However, on Saturday we saw it get removed from the Play Store due to some trouble with the FCC. Turns out Google jumped the gun and listed it before the FCC gave the thumbs-up. Yesterday it passed through the FCC right on cue, and now today it is finally back in the Play Store. You can snag it for $99, and it will leave the warehouse in 3-4 weeks. Go get it!

Official: Nexus 6 pre-orders open up October 29th

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 10:52 AM PDT

Nexus 6 Google Play Pre-order

When Google took the wraps off the Nexus 6 last week, other than a vague “later this month” pre-order date, they failed to give Android fanboys a specific date on when we could expect it to land on Google Play. Without any formal word or announcement, the Nexus 6 listing in the Google Play Store is now showing a pre-order date of October 29th.

Available in 32GB for $650, or 64GB for $700, like Google Play edition devices, we don’t imagine too many of you are going to opt for the full-priced unlocked model. Thankfully, unlike any other Nexus devices before it, you can get the phone subsidized or through carrier’s early upgrade / payment plans when it officially launches next month.

Still, we’re curious. Anyone planning on actually buying the $650+ unlocked model?

OnePlus One pre-orders begin October 27th, and you can get started right now

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 09:56 AM PDT

OnePlus One DSC06079

OnePlus is nearly ready to kick off their pre-order system for the OnePlus One. The company has announced that pre-sales will open October 27th, giving you a chance to claim a device without having to hunt down an invite. Folks who pre-order the phone will be given solid shipment estimates, however it won’t entitle you to a OnePlus One as fast as they’re available — a good ol’ invite will still get you ahead of the pack for receiving the phone in a timely manner.

You can prepare your pre-order as early as today by heading to the company’s website, and your order will be good to go by the time the floodgates open next week. There are a few things OnePlus wants you to keep in mind about the pre-order process:

  1. Two of each item may be added to your cart. All prices are final upon order confirmation.
  2. After confirming your order, shipping address can be changed within the same country, but customer name cannot be modified.
  3. Pre-orders can be cancelled prior to shipping but no changes can be made to the items in your order.
  4. If your payment order does not go through before the order it shipped, the pre-order will not be processed.

A couple other things worth noting: you can only pre-order if you have a functional Paypal account, and the pre-order window only lasts for 60 minutes. It’s not a bad route to take if you’re still interested in the OnePlus One but not interested in invite shenanigans. Let us know if you’ll be looking to grab one once things kick off October 27th at 15:00 GMT.

AT&T Galaxy Mega 2 drops Oct 24th for $150 on-contract

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 09:31 AM PDT

samsung galaxy mega 2

AT&T has announced that they’ll be selling a huge new phone October 24th. Literally. It’s the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2, a 6-inch phablet that’ll run you $150 on-contract or $475 outright. That translates to AT&T Next 12 and 18 prices of $23.75 per month and $19.80 per month, respectively. Go the AT&T Next route and add a new line or upgrade an existing one and you’ll be treated to a $100 bill credit.

AT&T hasn’t gone into a terribly long list of specifics, though we do know it’ll have an 8 megapixel camera that boasts 4X zoom, as well as a 2,800mAh battery. We also expect a quad-core processor, at least 1.5GB of RAM and more under the hood, though we’ll have to wait for further official details from AT&T to find out what’s making the thing tick.

DROID Turbo pops up in another classic leak

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 08:16 AM PDT

droid turbo render clear

In what would appear to be a small scale comeback if we didn’t know better, @evleaks has dished out another juicy render for us to lay eyes on. It’s the Motorola DROID Turbo we’ve been hearing so much about. Verizon is expected to reveal the device on October 28th, and the Motorola-made wonder is poised to be their best DROID yet.

The renders don’t really show us anything we didn’t already know about the device. It looks like a DROID, especially that classic Verizon Red model and all the Kevlar shining through on the back. We do get a very clear look at the front of the device which seems to boast a very prominent speaker grill. Shots of the device’s backside don’t turn up any rear-facing speakers so it’s possible the front speaker will be doing the heavy lifting for all external audio needs.

A previous leak of ours gave us an idea of what to expect under the hood. Verizon will make it a point to push the following areas once it heads to store shelves:

  • Its 21 megapixel camera and Quad HD (2560 x 1440) display
  • Its 2.7GHz quad-core processor and software like Moto Voice, Intelligent Imaging and Zap Zone (for beaming photos to friends, to nearby TVs or quickly capturing screenshots using voice and sending it off to whoever you want)
  • 48 hours of battery life (thanks to a 3,900mAh battery) and the ability to get 8 hours of life with 15 minutes of charging through the Motorola Turbo Charger
  • Metalized Glass Fiber build materials coated with Kevlar fiber, water resistant repellent coating, Corning Gorilla Glass
  • 32GB of internal storage and more

And with that — plus the news that the Nexus 6 will be made available for all major US carriers — Verizon customers have found themselves with some tough purchase decisions in the weeks and months ahead. Let us know if you’ll be looking to grab this once it’s made available later this year.

Spotify introduces family plans for folks who hate sharing accounts

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 07:13 AM PDT

spotify family

Spotify is a pretty good deal at $10 per month: unlimited, on-demand access to over 20 million music tracks, personalized radio and the like all make the price tag worth it. Unfortunately, folks who like to share accounts haven’t had an easy life with Spotify restricting playback to one device at a time. It’s also a headache for those who don’t want their recommendations and personalized radio being riddled with wacky suggestions.

And that’s why they decided to introduce a family plan. Up to five people can share a Spotify account if you pay $5 for each user after the first. A two person deal would run you $15, while a 5 person party would bring that total to $30. Each user gets their own login and maintain their own playlists, listening history and suggestions — no more getting a load of Disney soundtracks because your offspring had a field day on your account.

Splitting payments up evenly would save everyone money so it could make as much sense financially as it does technologically. Of course, some would be even happier with the ability to share accounts the old school way without restrictions, but Spotify has to make their money too, folks. Spotify says the plan will roll out globally in the coming weeks so you might not be seeing the change right away. Keep a lookout on their website for the new feature if this is something that could benefit you.

Forthcoming Gmail upgrade to add support for Yahoo and Outlook accounts

Posted: 20 Oct 2014 05:55 AM PDT

gmail update yahoo outlook

Google’s polishing up the final pieces of the big Gmail upgrade they’re planning to go along with the final rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop. The obvious changes will be in the user interface and aesthetics where Google will highlight Lollipop’s Material Design. The app stands to become a lot more colorful, clean and enjoyable compared to what some might consider a current stale experience that’s gotten a bit long in the tooth.

But more than just look and feel, Android Police reports that the app will look to support more than just Google accounts for email. The welcome video that will play once a user upgrades to the app tells of support for Yahoo and Outlook. Non-Gmail accounts were typically handled by the stock email client in the past, but this will be a great “one-size-fits-all” option for anyone getting email through the other big two providers.

gmail update yahoo outlook 2

What isn’t yet clear is if Yahoo and Outlook will be the only third-party services supported. We imagine there will still be a wide need for third-party email clients for folks dealing with Exchange or other special email needs, but this is a very nice change that should be happy news for any casual email user.

NEW 100 GBPS HIGH-SPEED TRANSATLANTIC NETWORK TO BENEFIT SCIENCE COLLABORATIONS
Scientists across the U.S. will soon have access to new, ultra high-speed network links spanning the Atlantic Ocean, thanks to a project currently underway to extend ESnet (the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network) to London, Amsterdam and Geneva. Although the project is designed to benefit data-intensive science throughout the U.S. national laboratory complex, heaviest users of the new links will be particle physicists conducting research at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and most powerful particle collider. The high capacity of this new connection will provide U.S. scientists with enhanced access to data at the LHC and other European-based experiments by accelerating the exchange of data sets between institutions in the U.S. and computing facilities in Europe.

USER-FRIENDLY ELECTRONIC 'EYECANE' ENHANCES NAVIGATIONAL ABILITIES FOR THE BLIND
White Canes provide low-tech assistance to the visually impaired, but some blind people object to their use because they are cumbersome, fail to detect elevated obstacles, or require long training periods to master. Electronic travel aids (ETAs) have the potential to improve navigation for the blind, but early versions had disadvantages that limited widespread adoption. A new ETA, the "EyeCane," developed by a team of researchers at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, expands the world of its users, allowing them to better estimate distance, navigate their environment, and avoid obstacles, according to a new study published in Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience.

TECHNOLOGY AND DATA ANALYTICS SHOULD TRANSFORM MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT, PROFESSORS SAY
Rarely is the term "city hall" considered synonymous with the words "innovation" or "efficiency." Too often, the public image of municipal government is of a static bureaucracy staffed with disinterested clock-watchers focused on petty tasks and arcane processes.

Pre-order the Nexus 9 early from Amazon for $399, ships Nov 3rd

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Amazon HTC Nexus 9 preorder

It’s a little bit early from Google’s announced October 17th pre-order date, but starting right now you can pre-order the HTC-made Nexus 9 from Amazon for $400 (16GB) or $480 (32GB). Left out was the LTE model and specific color options, but then again, Amazon did jump the gun.

Ship dates are currently set for November 3rd, same as anywhere else so pre-ordering now doesn’t necessarily guarantee you’ll receive the tablet early — it just gives you a little peace of mind. Tomorrow, the Nexus 9 will be available on the Google Play Store if you want to wait a few more hours.

For anyone wary, Amazon has some of the best customer service this side of the internet and could help avoid any frustrations that may arise should the Google Play Store sell out quickly. Links provided below.

Despite $16.5 billion in revenue, Google misses Q3 estimates

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 04:43 PM PDT

Google-HQ_logo

It was time for another one of Google’s investor calls this afternoon, with Google's CFO Patrick Pichette leading the call to talk about the company’s Q3 2014 earnings.
Despite Google tipping the scales at $16.5 billion in revenue for the quarter — a 20% growth year-over-year — it seems the internet search giant may have fallen just a little bit short of initial estimates with profits at $6.35 a share, versus a $6.53 projection.

This was due in part to slower growth of Google’s advertising business which was up 17%, but still a slowdown from Q2. Google’s websites were also up 20%, coming in less than the prior quarter’s 23% growth. Google’s operating expenses accounted for 37% of their revenue (up from 33% the previous year).

Looking ahead, Google is working on ads that resize themselves to accommodate the growing number of smaller displays (smartphones) accounting for web traffic. For those interested, you can find more detailed numbers over on Google’ official Investor Relations page linked below.

Here’s a few Nexus 6 camera samples, size comparison against iPhone 6 Plus too

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus

With Google surprising just about everyone and making an aggressive play to offer up the Nexus 6 across the 4 major carriers in the US, you would assume the phone is being actively tested on those networks. And you’d be right. Taking to his Google+ page, T-Mobile employee Duan Dao decided to post a few images of his test unit, not too unlike the one we saw T-Mobile Product Manager Des Smith unbox yesterday.

Because he’s a good sport, Dao was nice enough to go the extra mile and show the world how the phone compares in size to the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and last year’s Motorola Moto X. The best part was he even posted a few sample images showing off the phone’s photo taking abilities — something we haven’t seen given Google didn’t have time to send out actual review units for anyone to play around with (yet).

Unfortunately, these weren’t posted at anywhere near full res, so you wont be able to blow these up and thoroughly examine every pixel (we also blurred out a minor which appeared in one of the pics). Although the phone is still in testing and the software on the test units more than likely isn’t final, this is just a sample of what you may expect when the phone launches next month. What do you think?

Sony promises Lollipop for every single device in the Z series

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 11:57 AM PDT

sony-xperia-z3

You read that right — if your Sony Xperia phone is from the Z line, you’re getting Lollipop, no questions asked. Sony confirmed that much in a blog post today, and in case you’ve forgotten how many devices fit the bill here’s a handy dandy list:

  • Xperia Z
  • Xperia ZL
  • Xperia ZR
  • Xperia Tablet Z
  • Xperia Z1
  • Xperia Z1S
  • Xperia Z Ultra
  • Xperia Z1 Compact
  • Xperia Z2
  • Xperia Z2 Tablet
  • Xperia Z3
  • Xperia Z3v
  • Xperia Z3 Compact
  • Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

Sony says the core Xperia Z3 and Z2 models will be first in line with first upgrades expected to begin in early 2015. Timelines for the rest of the phones are still up in the air, though we’re sure Sony will work to get it out as soon as they can. That’s the extent of what we know about their plans to this point so we’ll be patiently awaiting more details from the Sony camp as the months tick by.

Apple’s new iPads vs Nexus 9 & Samsung Galaxy Tab S

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 11:08 AM PDT

Apple has announced a pair of iPad updates today, refreshing both models from last year with the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. The two devices don't change much in terms of design from the previous models, but a few key upgrades promise to once again make Apple's tablet offerings the talk of the town.

Before we get swept up in another round of Apple hype, let's breakdown how these slates really stack up against the best Android has to offer. We compare the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini head-to-head with the newly announced Nexus 9 by HTC and Samsung's Galaxy Tab S line.

iPad Air 2 vs Android competitors

Air 2 N9 Tab s

Apple's iPad Air 2 picks up where last year's model left off, packing plenty of punch the lightest and thinnest tablet (437g, 6.1mm) we have ever seen. Samsung's Galaxy Tab S, which launched earlier this year, gets close at 6.6mm (467g). The Nexus 9 is the odd man out with a thickness of 7.9mm, a measurement that is still nothing to scoff out. The N9 is the lightest of the tablets at 425g.

Display

With tablets seeing plenty of use as media devices, the display is without doubt one of the most important hardware elements to consider. The iPad Air, Galaxy Tab S, and Nexus 9 are all in the ballpark of 10 inches and all feature resolutions in excess of 1080p Full HD.

The Nexus 9 straddles the line between the large and mid-size tablets at 8.9 inches. It's 1536×2048 resolution equates to a pixel density of 281ppi across its surface area. The Galaxy Tab S offers the biggest display option at 10.5 inches. Its Super AMOLED display slightly edges the IPS LCD of the Nexus 9 with a resolution of 1600×2560 and a pixel density of 288ppi. The iPad Air 2 sits in the middle with its 9.7-inch Retina display, an IPS screen touting a resolution of 1536×2048 and a pixel density of 264ppi.

Processing Power & Battery

Between the Nexus 9, iPad Air 2, and Galaxy Tab S, there is plenty of processing power to go around. Each device is supported by a SoC from a different manufacturer, and each has its own advantages.

Apple's latest offering features the 64 bit A8X. The A8X is a iPad-tailored version of the A8 processor that debuted in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last month, a dual-core chip that has been tested to reveal clock speeds around 1.4GHz (Apple does not reveal detailed figures for its processors). The chip also includes an M8 coprocessor for handling motion sensor inputs and promises improved graphical capabilities.

The Nexus 9 relies on the NVIDIA Tegra K1 chip, a quad-core chipset clocked at 2.3GHz. This chip also includes a Kepler DX1, which comes with the claim of offering desktop-grade graphics on a mobile device. The Nexus 9's processor suite is supported by 2GB of RAM.

The Galaxy Tab S comes in two flavors. Some regions have access to the tablet with an Exynos 5420 octa-core processing, but most will see the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 variant. That device sports quad-core 2.3GHz processing and Adreno 330 graphics and 3GB RAM.

The iPad Air 2 features a battery that promises up to 10 hours of use (Apple did not reveal a specific capacity). The Galaxy Tab S features a 7900mAh battery that offers up to 11 hours of multimedia use. The Nexus 9 features a 6700mAh battery.

Fingerprint Scanner, Camera & Other Features

The latest generation of iPads are the first to feature Apple's Touch ID technology, allowing users to unlock their devices with a fingerprint and provide additional security for supported apps and services. The Galaxy Tab S offers a fingerprint scanner with similar capabilities, though it has been known to be slightly more finicky than its Apple competitor. The Nexus 9 does not include a finger scanner.

All devices feature rear and front facing cameras. The iPad Air 2 sports a 8MP rear camera and 1.2MP front-facing camera, while the Nexus 9 and Galaxy Tab S both feature an 8MP rear shooter and 1.6MP and 2.1MP front-facing sensor, respectively. All are capable of capturing 1080p HD video in addition to hi-res still photos.

All three devices feature dual-antenna MIMO WiFi for enhanced connectivity and improved data speeds. The three devices all also offer LTE-enabled variants to take advantage of mobile data over a cellular network.

Software

While two of our devices run Android and only one runs iOS, all three offer different software experiences. Chalk this up to the inclusion of Samsung's TouchWiz interface on the Galaxy Tab S (based on Android 4.4 KitKat) and the debut of Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Nexus 9. The new lineup of iPads sports iOS 8, Apple's latest update to their mobile platform.

The differences between the Galaxy Tab and Nexus 9 are mostly surface level — core Android features like widgets, multitasking, and access to the Google Play Store remain the same. The N9 does benefit from new features introduced in Android 5.0 including its Material Design interface (a new design language geared at unifying the Android experience across devices) as well as improved notification controls and a new battery saver mode.

iOS 8's differences are a bit more drastic. Users still have access to features like multitasking and over a million apps via Apple's App Store, but widgets are refined to the notification shade and other core differences exist in how iOS functions versus Android. Apple made a point of emphasizing continuity features that allow users to easily move from smartphone to tablet to Mac, enabling text message and voice calling support across devices paired with a connected iPhone.

Android Lollipop boasts some continuity features, but Google has focused on media. Users can start a movie or video on one device and pick right up on another, including televisions thanks to the new Nexus Player.

iPad mini 3 vs Android competitors

Mini 3 N9 Tab s

Apple also unveiled a new edition of their iPad mini, a device featuring an 8-inch display. This tablet perhaps best compares with the Samsung's smaller Galaxy Tab S, the 8.4-inch edition, but the Nexus 9's 8.9-inch form factor is still an option for those looking for a slightly smaller slate.

The iPad mini 3 features a 7.9-inch Retina display at 2048×1536 resolution and 326ppi. The Galaxy Tab S 8.4's Super AMOLED display measures 8.4 inches with a pixel dentist of 359ppi. Specs for the iPad mini and Galaxy Tab S 8.4 are otherwise identical to their larger counterparts.

Availability & Pricing

The iPad Air 2 will be available starting at $499 for a 16GB model, identical pricing to the equivalent Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 model. The iPad mini will retail starting at $399, a price point that again matches the Samsung Galaxy Tab S at the 8.4-inch level. The Nexus 9 will retail for an identical $399 for a 16GB model.

The Nexus 9 will go up for pre-order on October 17th with official availability beginning November 3rd. The new iPads will also be available for pre-order starting October 17th and ships next week. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S is currently available from a variety of retailers and carrier partners.

Austin, TX residents can sign up for Google Fiber starting in December

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 10:55 AM PDT

Google Fiber van

Quick heads up for those of you in Austin, Texas looking for better internet soon — Google Fiber is nearly ready, and Google will soon be taking signups from anyone interested. The company will accept signups from the metropolitan area of the city for any and all folks interested.

It’s believed that those in smaller, surrounding markets will have to pool together and show enough interest in Fiber for Google to start spreading the service (though if rollouts in Kansas City and Provo are anything to go by, that won’t be a huge issue).

Google will offer their standard gigabit high speed service for those willing to pay up the monthly coin for it, though basic free internet for 7 years is certain to be an option as long as you pay the $300 upfront installation cost. Not bad if you or someone you know doesn’t need a whole lot of data to get things done. Google has a sizable list of other cities they want to hit in the months to come and within the next year, but these things take time and you shouldn’t be holding your breath for Fiber in your area if you need internet connectivity now.

Apple Pay officially launches on Monday, get ready to start using Google Wallet in a lot more places

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 10:49 AM PDT

Apple Pay iPad event 2014

During this morning’s iPad event, Apple took a minute to discuss the progress they’ve made with Apple Pay (coming soon to iOS 8). I know what you’re thinking — “What does this have to do with Android?” Stay with me. Officially launching this Monday, October 20th, for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple Pay ushers in the age of NFC-based mobile payments. You know, that little hardware feature we’ve had in countless Android devices for ages now. And that’s just it. Tap-to-pay systems aren’t exclusive to just the iPhone, Android users can finally get in on the fun as well whatever your preferred mobile wallet may be (we aren’t tied down to one).

Apple said that since they announced the feature last month, more than 500 new banks are now supporting Apple Pay and even more retailers ranging from Walgreens, Macy’s, McDonald’s and more (over 220,000 and growing). I’ve actually experienced this transition firsthand while getting my haircut at a local barber shop. It’s old run down mom n’ pops join, but recently when I went to pay using my credit card, the little old lady busted out a shiny new Tap-to-Pay credit card machine from under the counter. When I asked her why the new hardware, she told me “Because the iPhone.” I’ll take it.

Samsung introduces their first 64-bit chipset — the Exynos 7 Octa

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 10:00 AM PDT

exynos 7 banner

Samsung has revealed a new chipset with a first for their long-standing Exynos line — it’s 64-bit goodness. It’s being called the Exynos 7 Octa, a 20nm setup that features four Cortex-A57 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores in a big.LITTLE configuration. That means any of the cores from any of the two sets of processors may be in use at any time, and usually contributes to a healthy mix of high power and high efficiency. Samsung says it offers 57% performance improvement over the previous generation.

For graphics, you can expect an ARM Mali T-760 GPU that is said to offer an improvement rate of 74%. It enables the use of 2560 x 1440 and 2560 x 1600 displays, and can also support simultaneous photo and video capture at 16 megapixels and 5 megapixels for the rear and front cameras, respectively (both at 30 frames per second). Not too shabby, and for typical use cases — like gaming — it should prove to be more than enough for any user’s needs.

Interestingly enough, it appears that the Exynos 7 Octa is actually nearly the same as the Exynos 5433 that is featured in international versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, with the only difference being that the Exynos 7 Octa offers 64-bit support. That should effectively erase buyer’s remorse for anyone who was thinking their smartphones were immediately outdated by this announcement (especially for North American folks who are on Qualcomm-made configurations anyway).

Samsung didn’t have many more details to offer such as clock speeds, though we imagine we’ll be hearing a lot more about this new generation of Exynos in 2015 as Samsung looks to use it in all their flagship products.

HTC confirms Lollipop for One M7, One Mini (2013) and One M8

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 08:56 AM PDT

Android 5.0 Lollipop Bugdroid

Not that we were worried that HTC’s flagship smartphones from the past two years would receive Lollipop, but the company has come out to confirm that the HTC One M7 and the HTC One M8 will both be receiving the upgrade within 90 days of the update’s release. Of course, time will vary from region to region and variant to variant, but HTC’s been pretty good about sticking to their timelines over the past couple of years so we shouldn’t be subject to any lengthy delays.

A bit more on the surprising side is that the HTC One M7 Mini is now confirmed to be receiving Lollipop. The smartphone is only one year old, but it’s underpowered compared to its bigger sibling by a similar name. That said, Google said Android 5.0 Lollipop would be optimized for entry-level hardware and the HTC One M7 Mini sure has more than enough to handle the load. We’ll be looking to see if any other devices in HTC’s catalog will be in line to receive the upgrade so stay tuned.

HTC One M8 Developer Edition is now receiving EYE camera update

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 07:58 AM PDT

HTC One M8 EYE

Owners of the unlocked international HTC One M8 started to receive the EYE update being featured on HTC’s new selfie-focused Desire EYE, and now developer edition owners are in for more of the same. The upgrade is now being rolled out to that crop of M8 owners over the air. You’ll be looking for version 3.28.1540.5, and if you haven’t been keeping up it’ll bring the following changes:

  • Face tracking: track up to 4 faces during a video chat, and ensure that they stay within the camera’s angle of view
  • Split Capture: record the action in front of you and yourself at the same time, or record the action first and then record a commentary
  • Face Fusion: Using 2 photos such as your selfie and a photo of your favorite celebrity, try merging your looks together
  • Voice Selfie: Take a picture or video selfie by just saying “say cheese” or “action”
  • Live Makeup: smoothen your skin before taking a selfie
  • Photo Booth: take 4 selfies and merge them into a single picture

It’s nothing that’s going to improve the quality of the photos you take with the HTC One M8’s cameras, but certainly some very cool features if you’re super big into selfies. The update is quite large at about 235.92MB so be sure to enable WiFi and charge your battery before attempting to pull it down. All that’s left is to get the upgrade to those on carrier variants of the HTC One M8 (though we have a feeling it will take a bit longer to accomplish that).

Full Android L Casting Call video shows lots of disappointed desserts

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 07:01 AM PDT

So Google came out and confirmed that Android L would be named Lollipop. So what happened at the end of the casting call video with all the other tasty desserts auditioning? Well, a wave of disappointment, that’s what. So sad to see cute little lemon drop walk away with a frown.

casting call ending

Even worse is Ladoo — poor guy couldn’t even get up and walk himself out of the door. But Lollipop sure had a good time, and it’s going to enjoy the crown of the “L” release until “M” drops. Speaking of which, Google might have hinted that “muffin” would be on the horizon. Or maybe that was Lollipop’s character choosing the worst M dessert you could think of to instill some hope back into today’s failed contestants. Be sure to grab a look at the video above.

This is how the Nexus 9 looks in the real world [Pics, Video]

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 06:21 AM PDT

Renders are enough to give us a decent idea of how a new device looks at its best, but there’s nothing like getting a look at the thing in the flesh. The Nexus 9 won’t be available until November 3rd, but some lucky souls in Vietnam have already gotten a chance to finagle the thing and were gracious enough to deliver all the photos and video we can handle.

nexus 9 flesh 1

The device doesn’t really look more or less cool than what we’ve seen in the official press renders, though we were taken aback by the fact that it definitely is as thin as advertised. And it does look absolutely stunning. We obviously can’t comment on how it feels in the hand just yet, but early impressions suggest you won’t have any issues palming the 8.9-inch tablet.

The Nexus 9’s 4:3 aspect ratio might have been off-putting on paper, but it looks like a really comfortable, natural device that should hopefully bring 4:3 back in style for the tablet scene. One last thing — that keyboard case looks freaking awesome. The case is a very snug fit when not in use, and it looks to fold out into a laptop-like state with ease. Needless to say this is most certainly one of the best looking tablets out there, and we imagine there won’t be a much better way to spend $400 this year if you’re in the market for one. Be sure to head to the source links for a lot more.
