Root and Install Clockwork Mod Recovery on LG Optimus 3D P920
Fortunately for all the LG Optimus 3D P920 users, a custom recovery
image is now available, which brings the ability to install custom ROMs
on the device. Please note that the recovery image file is also
available for the LG Thrill, so you can follow this guide in order to
install it.
We will now teach you to install the custom recovery image, and
latest touch Clockwork Mod Recovery ( CWM ) on your LG Optimus 3D P920
Android smart phone.
Before you begin the process please note that your data might be
corrupted or even lost so you have to do backups on order to recover it
afterwards.
Backup your data
The most important data to be backed up are the contacts and media
files including images, songs and videos. Though you might also backup
your SMS messages, call logs, APN and MMS settings.
For the contacts we recommend you to sync them with your Gmail account. Read here how to sync you contacts with Gmail. We also recommend you to use the Call Logs Backup & Restore application to backup call logs and the SMS Backup & Restore application for SMS messages.
If you want to backup the APN and MMS settings, the easiest way is to
note them down on a piece of paper. Images, Songs, Videos and any other
files should be copied on either the internal or external SD card,
because they won’t be affected during the installation.
Preparing to install custom recovery image
There are risks while installing the custom recovery image, so you
have to read everything carefully and make sure not to skip anything or
you might damage or even brick your LG Optimus 3D.
- First make sure that your battery is at least 60% full, or otherwise the device might turn off during the installation.
- Then you have to enable the USB Debugging on your device. To do it go to “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging” and tick “USB Debugging”.
- Disable all security suites and any other antivirus software because they might interact with the installation software and stop it.
- Make sure that your computer recognizes the device. If it doesn’t, find and install the latest USB Drivers for it.
How to install custom recovery image and CWM on your LG Optimus 3D P920
Download the Recovery Manager package here and then extract it.
Before you start running any file from the package, we recommend that all files you launch to be executed as administrator, because they may require admin rights. Also make sure that your device is disconnected from the PC.
First you have to install the adb drivers found in the package. After that run the file Recovery Manager.bat and then connect the device to your computer through USB. You will now see 5 options on your screen. You have to type 1 and press enter in order to install the custom recovery image. You can also press 2 or 3 and then hit enter to install the CWM recovery.
Now you can exit the application and unplug your LG Optimus 3D or LG Thrill from the computer. To see whether the root worked you have to boot it into recovery mode. First shut down the device, then press volume up + power button simultaneously. If you can see recovery mode then your device is rooted and you have to install the Super User app from the Google Play.
Now that your device is rooted you can update it to any custom ROM you want. We will soon have guides on how to update your Lg Optimus 3D to a handful of custom ROMs, including the CyanogenMod 7.2.
If you encounter any problem during the installation please let us know and we will do our best to help you.
Please note that if you are not careful during the installation, your LG Optimus 3D or LG Thrill might get damaged or bricked. We can’t be held responsible for any damages and neither can the app developers.
