RUBBER TECHNOLOGY IMPORTANT IN REDUCING CO2 EMISSIONS
Despite numerous measures taken by manufacturers, the worldwide level of CO2 car emissions is still increasing at an alarming rate. The automotive sector is working hard to develop lightweight constructions, which is the best way to reduce fuel consumption and therefore also the greenhouse effect. At the same time, tyre manufacturers are also developing organic car tyres with the lowest possible rolling resistance. New kinds of natural rubber have been discovered for this purpose. Anke Blume, Professor at the University of Twente, is working closely with the industry in this field. Blume has unique knowledge in the field of polymers with rubbery characteristics (elastomers). She will give her inaugural lecture on 25 September.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE THAT IMITATES CHILDREN'S LEARNING
The computer programmes used in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) are highly specialised. They can for example fly airplanes, play chess or assemble cars in controlled industrial environments. However, a research team from Gothenburg, Sweden, has now been able to create an AI programme that can learn how to solve problems in many different areas. The programme is designed to imitate certain aspects of children's cognitive development.

TEAM DEVELOP 'AUTOTUNE' SOFTWARE TO MAKE IT QUICKER, EASIER AND CHEAPER TO MODEL ENERGY USE OF BUILDINGS
There are many ways to save energy in residential and commercial buildings. There are products that use less energy for lighting, heating and cooling; materials that better insulate and seal building envelopes; and architectural and engineering designs that lower utility bills through efficient use of space and renewable energy. In fact, experts specify up to 3,000 parameters when modeling a building's energy use.

PARAFFINS TO CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN HOMES
Thermal energy storage is a common strategy in energy production systems in which the period of production does not coincide with that of consumption. This happens with the production of hot water by means of solar thermal panels, for example; here, hot water is produced during sunlight hours when demand is lower. It is also the case in residential cogeneration, where heat and electrical power are simultaneously generated but not so demand. In both cases, storing the heat allows production to be decoupled from demand, thus making the integration of these technologies into buildings more flexible. Here, it is normal for periods of energy production not to coincide with those when it is consumed.
