EDITOR’S NOTE
Arduino for Engineers

As we were prepping Sean Hubber and Crystal Lu’s article, “Hands-On Electrocardiography,” for publication, it occurred to me that we’re steadily building an excellent stock of Arduino-related project articles for engineers. Simply put, we believe that pro engineers and academics can find a lot of clever uses for platforms such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi. If you’re looking for some interesting examples, check these out.
  • DIY Arduino-Based ECG System: This microcontroller-based electrocardiography (ECG) system enables you to view your heart’s waveform on a mini TV. The system includes a circuit, hardware, and a voltage limiter.
  • Execute Arduino Code in a PIC Microcontroller: Here’s an approach that enables Arduino code to be configured for execution with the Microchip Technology PIC32MX250F128B small-outline 32-bit microcontroller. It uses the Microchip Technology MPLAB X IDE and MPLAB XC32 C Compiler and the Microchip Technology Microstick II programmer/debugger.
  • Using Arduino for Prototyping: An engineer added a gyroscope sensor to a project. He purchased a gyroscope board and plugged it into an Arduino breadboard shield purchased from eBay for roughly $5. He then wired up the four pins: VCC (3.3 V), GND, SCL, and SDA.
You can share your Arduino-based projects as well! Just email them to me (cabate@circuitcellar.com). If your project is really good, we might ask you to consider publishing article about it in Circuit Cellar.

ELECTRONICS WORKSPACE
Electronics Engineering in an IKEA Cabinet

Surprise! It’s time for pop quiz! Are you ready? If so, put on your thinking cap! Which of the following terms doesn’t belong?
  1. Microcontroller
  2. Solder
  3. Multimeter
  4. IKEA
Micrcontrollers and electrical engineering probably don't come to mind when you flip through an IKEA product catalog. But this week, engineer Patrik Thalin shows you why IKEA could be an excellent source for workspace furniture.

User-Extensible FDA for Real-Time Oscilloscopes
Keysight Technologies recently announced the availability of a frequency domain analysis (FDA) option, a user-extensible spectrum frequency domain analysis application solution for real-time oscilloscopes. The FDA option extends the capabilities of Keysight Infiniium and InfiniiVision Series oscilloscopes by enabling you to acquire live signals and visualize them in the frequency domain, as well as make key frequency domain measurements.

100-V Forward Voltage Controller
Linear Technology’s LT8310 is a resonant-reset forward converter controller that drives an external low side N-channel MOSFET from an internally regulated 10V supply. The LT8310 features duty mode control to generate a stable, regulated, isolated output using a single power transformer. With the addition of output voltage feedback, via opto-coupler (isolated) or directly wired (nonisolated), current mode regulation is activated, improving output accuracy and load response. A choice of transformer turns ratio makes high step-down or step-up ratios possible without operating at duty cycle extremes.

Embedded Chip-8 Video Game System
This embedded 8-Chip video game system was implemented it on a PSoC 29466 with a standard LCD screen, a few buttons, an EEPROM, and a buzzer. According to the designer, “the hardware is not complicated at all and therefore is perfect for students or software engineers who want to learn about electronics. The software part is a little bit more tricky, but brings a thorough knowledge of computer's architecture's basics as the main purpose is to simulate one.”
